Think about the last time you watched a thriller where someone was being followed down a dark alley and you felt anxious and terrified even though you weren’t even there and even though you knew it wasn’t real.
Think about the last time you had an unpleasant confrontation with someone and whilst replaying it to a friend or partner you experienced the same anxiety, the same anger that you felt at the time.
Your subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and what’s imagined and if you replay in your mind an unpleasant encounter, experience or memory you feel all of the same feelings that you did at the time …
What if you could turn this around and have this work to your advantage?
Do you want to be able to eat only when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full?
Imagine yourself doing this.
Imagine yourself mindfully and carefully choosing foods that nourish your body.
Imagine yourself picking up your knife and fork and eating and enjoying these foods.
Imagine yourself experiencing the sensation that you’re full and putting down your knife and fork and putting the remaining food into the bin.
Do you want to stop the habit of snacking out of boredom, loneliness or for comfort?
Think about what you would do instead.
Instead of eating when you’re bored, choose to do a chore in the house that needs to be done.
Instead of eating when you’re feeling lonely, make a cup of tea and ring a friend for a chat.
Instead of eating when you’ve had an awful day at work, give yourself a boost with some nourishing food.
Instead of eating when you get home because your boss was an idiot to you, listen to some positive meditation to boost your mood.
The more time you spend imagining these new ways, new positive behaviours, the easier you will find doing it for real because you are showing your subconscious mind what you want to happen, you are showing your subconscious mind the new habits that you want. It will create new neural pathways in your brain, change old habits and help you to reach your goal.
